#594 – Rare Anglo-Zulu War Period Large Zulu Battle Shield Isihlangu (Лот: 6497)
Rare Anglo-Zulu War Period Large Zulu Battle Shield Isihlangu, fine example of a very rare to find large battle shield, known as a Isihlangu, with brown and white fur on the hide base of the shield indicating a warrior with experience. The shield has the tabs to the reverse for the staff. This example has been mounted with a large spear, the spear head having a medial ridge which may indicate that it is from another part of Africa as not typical of Zulu from our understanding. The shield measures 145 x 79cms approx. Some minor areas of fur loss but generally a fantastic example. The large battle shields are extremely hard to find now compared to the much smaller type shields. This pattern of hide was for warriors with previous experience and as such would have been carried in battles such as the famous actions of the Anglo-Zulu war, including the battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and Ulundi etc. Provenance: from an old private collection. Please note, due to the size, we are not able to offer in house post and packing on this lot, however we can advise on specialist shippers or couriers here in the UK
