Victorian Medal Group of Three to a Naval Officer who Commanded HMS Coquette During the Ashanti Uprising and Later Saw Service During the 1885 Sudan Campaign, Ashantee medal 1873-74, no clasp, officially engraved naming ‘LT COMG W.E. DARWALL R.N. H.M.S. COQUETTE 73-74’, Egypt and Sudan medal 1882-89, 1 clasp Suakin 1885, ‘COMMDR W.E. DARWALL R.N. H.M.S. RANGER’ with Khedive’s Star, obverse dated 1884. Some contact marks on Egypt medal, medals contained in small, glazed frame, not removed for checking but naming is visible. Sold with a large archive of original documents including; 8 hard back photograph albums – mainly family shots with some Naval and Nursing photographs, 1 scrap book containing newspaper cuttings from the 1st decade of the 20th century, put together by Darwall’s youngest daughter, Various photographs including some in Naval uniform, Night Order book for HMS Tyne, covering the period Jan 1886 to March 1887, some water damage and loss to pages, Defence of the Realm permit book for the Dover area, Semaphore and Morse instruction leaflet.illiam Eveleigh Darwall was born in Dover on 13th April 1843, he entered the Royal Navy on 9th October 1856 as a Naval Cadet on H.M.S. Colossus. Midshipman 9th October 1858, Sub Lieutenant 25th April 1862, Lieutenant 21st June 1864, Commander 1st August 1881. He transferred to the Coastguard on 3rd September 1889. uring the Ashantee campaign he succeeded Lieutenant Commanding E.D. Law on 1st January 1874 following Law’s discharge after a Court Martial on 31st December 1873. arwall is confirmed on the medal rolls for all 3 medals and the clasp, this appears to be his full group.illiam Eveleigh Darwell retired with the rank of Captain on 13th April 1893. He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, on 12rh September 1919 following a cycling accident where was in collision with a taxicab.

Trio of Medals to a Recipient in the Royal Fusiliers Covering Service in the 2nd Boer War and the Great War, Queens South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, ‘2242 PTE F. COOK 5TH RL FUS’, medal on ornate Toye & Co. London ribbon buckle, British War and Victory Medals, ‘GS-14390 PTE. H. COOK R.FUS.’ Note different initials on medals. With a Belgian King Leopold II Commemorative Medal 18651905 and a miniature ribbon bar that also includes Kings South Africa Medal and 1914/15 Star ribbons, all loosely contained in a small, glazed display box.Records show medals are issued to Henry Cook (Q.S.A. has wrong initial) from Islington, London who attested for service on 31st July 1899 and embarked for South Africa on 4th June 1901. He was discharged on termination of his term of engagement on 30th July 1905. During the Great War, Henry Cook served with 32nd and 26th Battalions and was in France from 4th May 1916 to 3rd February 1919.Henry Cook is confirmed on the rolls for the Queens South Africa Medal with these 4 clasps and was awarded a pair of medals for the Great War (he is not entitled to the Kings South Africa Medal or either of the Great War Stars).

Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment 1917 Casualty, awarded to ‘ALBERT DICCOX’. Generally good condition. 22313 Private Albert Diccox, 2nd Devonshire Regiment who was killed in action aged 26 years on 14th April 1917 during the attack on Villers Guislains. The attack failed due to the presence of wire defences and heavy machine gun fire resulting in 17 Other Ranks being killed and 26 wounded. He was originally from Idstone Ashbury in Wiltshire.

Third Reich SA (Sturmabteilung) Dress Dagger by Very Rare Maker Heinrich Krom, München, good untouched as found example of an early model SA dress dagger with dark brown wooden grip having nickel eagle and enamel SA device. Lower cross guard mount stamped with original owners membership number ‘19676’. Housed in early anodised scabbard with the lower scabbard mount showing heavy wear and denting to the ball tip. Double edged blade with the remains of the blackened finish to the standard motto ‘Alles fur Deutschland’. Makers trademark to the reverse of the blade. The blade shows some staining and wear. The blade measures 22cms, overall 37cms. It is believed that this maker only produced about 1,000 SA dress daggers and is rated as a 10 on rarity scale (the highest number achievable)

US AMES MODEL 1834 GENERALS & GENERAL STAFF OFFICERS SWORD WITH BELT AND BUCKLE, only made by Ames, the ricasso is mkd. ‘N.P. Ames, Cutler Springfield’, the double engraved blade shows a patriotic eagle, an Indian, a US shield, floral designs etc., the grip is a gray ribbed iron, also has an iron clamshell guard & pommel both retaining about 90% of their gold gilt, the black leather scabbard has some cracking & some seam separation but are very solid as are the 3 gilted decorative brass mounts, comes w/ dam- aged gold bullion knot & correct white buff leather frog (separation on back), the belt is an early white buff leather, the gilted brass buckle is a tongue & wreath style w/ an oakleaf wreath having an elaborate ‘US’ tongue (reverse of both are stamped ‘XV’ (a foundry mark))VG++

WASHFORD R.A.M.C.’, ghost dates on reverse of medal. rank Herbert Washford was a 22-year-old Lunatic Attendant from Bearsted, Maidstone when he attested on 9th June 1900. He served for a total of 1 year 269 days of which he spent 1 year and 260 days in South Africa before his discharge on 4th March 1902. e is entitled to 3 clasps on this medal, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal as well as being awarded the Kings medal with 2 clasps.

A Good Great War 1918 Oise-Sambre Canal Crossing Military Cross Medal Group of 4 to an Officer in the Machine Gun Corps who was Commissioned from the 28th London (Artists Rifles) and Finished the War as a Major, Military Cross, GVR, reverse neatly engraved in 3 lines, ‘CAPTAIN F A LOTT, 1ST BN WELCH REGT, ATTD M.G.C.’ on investiture pin in faded case of issue, 1914-15 Star Medal, ‘1778 PTE. F.A. LOTT 28-LOND. R.’, British War and Victory Medal, ‘MAJOR F.A. LOTT’. With some original documentation, Army Order 6th March 1919 listing the Military Cross to Captain Lott, telegram notification of investiture dated 11th March 1919, letter confirming availability to attend investiture on 15th and an investiture ticket for Buckingham Palace on 15th March 1919, this in official envelope.Military Cross, London Gazette 2nd April 1919 – T./Lt. (A./Capt.) Francis Albert Lott, Welsh R., secd. 32nd Bn., M.G. Corps:Citation, London Gazette 10th December 1919 – T./Lt. (A./Capt.)-Francis Albert Lott, Welsh R., secd. 32nd Bn., M.G. Corps. For conspicuous, courage and devotion to duty at the crossing of the Oise-Sambre Canal near Ors on 4th November 1918. He carried out personal- reconnaissance and pushed his guns boldly forward before the attack; during the. attack he opened an intense fire on enemy machine-guns and swept the points from which the bridging parties could .be fired on. This made it. possible for the canal to be bridged very quickly.Francis Albert Lott was born in July 1886 in Hackney, London. By 1911 was residing in Lambeth and was employed as a Bank Clerk. When war broke out, he initially served with the 28th (County of London) Battalion, Artists Rifles, arriving in France on 6th December 1914. He was commissioned into the 1st Battalion Welsh Regiment on 25th May 1915 and was later attached to the 32nd Battalion Machine Gun Corps with whom he won his Military Cross.Post war he continued his work in the banking world and by 1939 he was a Bank Manager living in Sevenoaks. Francis Lott died in Sevenoaks on Christmas day 1953.

Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque Royal Scots Fusiliers 2nd Day of Battle of Loos Casualty, awarded to ‘FREDERICK MCINNES’, obverse showing signs of heavy polishing. 11118 Private Frederick McInnes 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. Originally from Aloa, Clackmannanshire he was killed on the 2nd day of the Battle of Loos, 26th September 1915. His body was never reco9vered and he is remembered on the Loos Memorial, France.
