An Interesting Family Medal Group to an Interwar Period Professional Footballer who was Taken Prisoner of War Whilst Serving with the Royal Artillery in July 1940, 1939-45 Star medal, War medal 1939-45 with Army Council medal issue slip for 2 medals in cardboard box of issue addressed to W.E, Kirkbright, 69 Coast Road, Rhyl. Also with a pair of fibreboard dog tags impressed 1458981 and an intact zinc German prisoner of war tag impressed STALAG XXIB NR. 7419. With his fathers 1914 Star medal on a white metal watch chain, medal impressed ‘TS-1201 DVR J. KIRKBRIGHT A.S.C.’ Lot also contains 4 hall marked silver sports medals and a collection of original documentation relating to William Ernest Kirkbright’s career as a professional Footballer. Silver sports medals with engraving on the reverse – S.& D.F.L. LITTLE GEM CUP WINNERS 1924-5, S.& D.F.L. LITTLE GEM CUP WINNERS 1927-8, B.V.F.L 1934/5, B.V.F.L. S.M.L. 1934-35. Original documentation includes: 2 selection to play notification post cards from Shrewsbury Town F.C. dated 17th and 25th August 1926, Letter from Wrexham Association Football Club inviting William to play a trial match, 18th July 1926, Letter from Willenhall Football Club relating to a trial game, 18th June 1924, 2 letters from Birmingham Football Club relating to playing against Aston Villa ‘A’ team, Letter from Kidderminster Harriers & Football Club regarding playing a trial match as a centre forward, 27th March 1926. Documents in varying conditions with some tearing and loss but still legible.John Kirkbright from Small Heath Birmingham attested for service on 15th May 1914, served with the Meerut Reserve Park and was discharged as no longer fit for service on 12th November 1917 due to a fractured right thumb.William Ernest Kirkbright enlisted on 27th April 1930 and was reported missing whilst serving with the 239/101 A.A.& A. Tk Regt on Casualty List 269, 31st July 1940. He is confirmed as a Prisoner of War on casualty list 323, 2nd October 1940 and his release is notified in Casualty List 1816, 24th July 1945 from Stalag 383, Hohenfels. This lot comes with some additional information from the family indicating that he refereed the 1937 F.A. Cup Final in 1937 but we have at present been unable to confirm this. An interesting lot worthy of further research.

Third Reich NSKK Mans Dagger with Personal Dedication to Blade by E Knecht & Co, Solingen, fine example with dark brown wooden grip having nickel eagle and enamel SA emblem devices. Nickel top and lower mounts with the reverse of the lower mount being stamped with district mark ‘Wn’. Housed in the original blackened scabbard with single short black leather hanging strap. The blade is double edged and with standard motto ‘Alles fur Deutschland’. Reverse of the blade has the makers trademark logo of the two stag heads and a fine lightly engraved dedication ‘Für treue Kameradschaft Götz, Sturmhauptführer 1.1.37’. The blade 22 ¼ cms, overall 37 ½ cms. Much of the blackening to the motto remains, some scuffs to the scabbard finish but generally a very good example.

GLASCOW R.A.M.C.’.Single clasp medal is confirmed on the medal roll for No.6 Hospital, Johannesburg where he is shown as having died at Naauwpoort on 8th March 1900.

Third Reich NSKK Mans Dagger by F Dick, fine example of an enlisted mans NSKK dress dagger with wooden handle having eagle and enamel SA devices. Nickel silver top and lower mount fittings, reverse of the lower mount stamped with gau district mark ‘S’. The top screw nut is in the form of an early mobile type swastika. Housed in its original scabbard with the top and lower scabbard mounts being beautifully hand engraved with oakleaves. Attached to the scabbard ring is a single leather hanging strap. Plain double edged blade with motto ‘Alles fur Deutschland’ to the centre. The motto retains much of the blackened finish. Reverse of the blade has makers trademark for ‘F DICK’. The blade 22cms, overall 37cms. Screw missing from the top scabbard mount and one from the lower chape. Some denting to the lower ball.

Great War Beaumont Hamel Military Cross Medal Group of Six to an Officer in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, Who Despite Being Wounded Stayed at his Post for Two Days, Military Cross, GV, reverse of cross neatly engraved ‘BEAUMONT HAMEL, CHARLES LOWNDES, 52ND LIGHT INFANTRY, NOVR. 13.14.15 1916’, British War and Victory medals, ‘LIEUT. F.C.L.A. LOWNDES’, 1939-45 Star medal, Italy Star medal, War medal 1939-45, last 3 unnamed as issued. Group mounted as worn on faded ribbons and contained in a period glazed display case.Military Cross, London Gazette 14th February 1917, page 1542 – 2nd Lt. Frederic Charles Louis Arthur Lowndes, Oxf. and Bucks. L.I. – For conspicuous gallantry in action. He showed marked courage and initiative in organising a bombing party at a critical time. Later, although wounded, he continued to carry out his duties and remained out for two days.Born on 2nd January 1898, the only sone of F.S.A. Lowdnes, who was on the staff of the Times newspaper and the author Marie Belloc Lowndes. He was educated at Winchester and Westminster Colleges before attending the Royal Military College Sandhust. Gazetted to the Regiment on 7th April 1916, he joined the 2nd Battalion in France on 9th September 1916. Wounded on 13th November 1916where the Battalion suffered 13 Officer and 235 Other Rank casualties he was invalided back to England.He rejoined the Regiment on 9th June 1917 and was again wounded in April 1918 and was once again retuned to England. He returned to the Regiment on 11th October taking part in the final actions of the war and entered Germany as part of the Army of Occupation. In April 1919 he left for service in North Russia returning to the UK on 4th October 1919. He resigned his commission on 15th September 1924.In 1925 he changed his name by deed poll to Belloc-LowndesOn the outbreak of the Second World War he rejoined being appointed Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps joining the BEF in France being evacuated via Brittany. He then served in various units through out the UK before being retired as unfit for further service. In 1944 he was deemed fit for overseas service and worked as a Hostel Warden for TOC H and in January 1945 he transferred to Italy returning in the autumn.He died suddenly on in London on 8th July 1948 leaving a widow and 2 children.

D. WILSON R.A.M.C.’ Ghost dates to reverse of medal. avid Wilson is confirmed on the medal roll for the 10th Brigade Field Hospital and is only entitled to these 2 clasps. The roll indicated that he died on 19th April 1900 and additional research shows he died of dysentery at Hydes Farm, Ladysmith.
