Sole Entitlement Victorian Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to the Royal Engineers, Army Long Service and Good Conduct medal, VR, 3rd issue, small letter reverse, impressed naming ‘3368 CORPL R. BLACKBOURN, RL ENGRS’ 1 small edge knock. 20 year old Richard Blackbourn from Hull attested for the Royal Engineers on 7th August 1855. Her served for 21 years and 16 days of which 11 years and 183 days were spent in Gibraltar with the 25th Company. His Long Service medal was confirmed in in Aug 1875 and he was discharged on 22nd August 1876 with this being his only medal entitlement.

Campaign Medal Group of Five Covering Service in the 2nd Boer War and the Great War with the Northumberland Fusiliers and Royal Engineers, Queens South Africa Medal with 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal, impressed, ‘5449 PTE. A DAWSON NORTH’D FUS:’ surname has been re-engraved, Kings South Africa Medal with clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, impressed, ‘5449 PTE A DAWSON NORTH’D FUS.’, 1914-15 Star Medal, British War and Victory Medals, ‘2055 DVR. A.R. DAWSON R.E.’. Group court mounted for display.18-year-old Arthur Dawson from Newcastle upon Tyne attested for service in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 28th June 1898. He served for a total of 12 years which included 3 years and 35 days in South Africa and 3 years in Mauritius before his discharge on 27th June 1910. He rejoined for the Great War serving in the Royal Engineers in France from 4th July 1915. He also served with service number 461028 and was discharged to Class Z Army Reserve on 28th May 1919. Confirmed on the roll of the 1st Battalion for the Queens and Kings South Africa medals with the clasps on these medals.

Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque 1st / 4th Royal Scots Fusiliers Palestine Casualty, awarded to ‘DOUGLAS GREIG DUNCAN’, some verdigris present on the edge of the plaque. 202871 Private Douglas Greig Duncan 1st/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers. From Newmilns Ayreshire he died in Palestine on 19th April 1917 aged 20 years old and is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine. Entitled to a British War and Victory medal.

Third Reich SA (Sturmabteilung) Dress Dagger with 1936 Sports Day Dedication for SA-Standarte 187, by August Merten, Solingen, good untouched early model SA dress dagger with dark wooden grip having the original eagle and enamel SA device inserted. Lower cross guard mount stamped with ‘S’. Housed in its anodised scabbard with the top mount missing one screw. Some denting to the ball and cracking to the lower chape. Double edged blade with motto ‘Alles fur Deutschland’, reverse with makers trademark and lightly engraved dedication ‘Sportkampftag 1936 Standarte, 187’. The blade shows some wear with surface staining. Blade 22cms, overall 37cms.

Victorian Medal Group of Three to a Naval Officer who Commanded HMS Coquette During the Ashanti Uprising and Later Saw Service During the 1885 Sudan Campaign, Ashantee medal 1873-74, no clasp, officially engraved naming ‘LT COMG W.E. DARWALL R.N. H.M.S. COQUETTE 73-74’, Egypt and Sudan medal 1882-89, 1 clasp Suakin 1885, ‘COMMDR W.E. DARWALL R.N. H.M.S. RANGER’ with Khedive’s Star, obverse dated 1884. Some contact marks on Egypt medal, medals contained in small, glazed frame, not removed for checking but naming is visible. Sold with a large archive of original documents including; 8 hard back photograph albums – mainly family shots with some Naval and Nursing photographs, 1 scrap book containing newspaper cuttings from the 1st decade of the 20th century, put together by Darwall’s youngest daughter, Various photographs including some in Naval uniform, Night Order book for HMS Tyne, covering the period Jan 1886 to March 1887, some water damage and loss to pages, Defence of the Realm permit book for the Dover area, Semaphore and Morse instruction leaflet.illiam Eveleigh Darwall was born in Dover on 13th April 1843, he entered the Royal Navy on 9th October 1856 as a Naval Cadet on H.M.S. Colossus. Midshipman 9th October 1858, Sub Lieutenant 25th April 1862, Lieutenant 21st June 1864, Commander 1st August 1881. He transferred to the Coastguard on 3rd September 1889. uring the Ashantee campaign he succeeded Lieutenant Commanding E.D. Law on 1st January 1874 following Law’s discharge after a Court Martial on 31st December 1873. arwall is confirmed on the medal rolls for all 3 medals and the clasp, this appears to be his full group.illiam Eveleigh Darwell retired with the rank of Captain on 13th April 1893. He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, on 12rh September 1919 following a cycling accident where was in collision with a taxicab.

Trio of Medals to a Recipient in the Royal Fusiliers Covering Service in the 2nd Boer War and the Great War, Queens South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, ‘2242 PTE F. COOK 5TH RL FUS’, medal on ornate Toye & Co. London ribbon buckle, British War and Victory Medals, ‘GS-14390 PTE. H. COOK R.FUS.’ Note different initials on medals. With a Belgian King Leopold II Commemorative Medal 18651905 and a miniature ribbon bar that also includes Kings South Africa Medal and 1914/15 Star ribbons, all loosely contained in a small, glazed display box.Records show medals are issued to Henry Cook (Q.S.A. has wrong initial) from Islington, London who attested for service on 31st July 1899 and embarked for South Africa on 4th June 1901. He was discharged on termination of his term of engagement on 30th July 1905. During the Great War, Henry Cook served with 32nd and 26th Battalions and was in France from 4th May 1916 to 3rd February 1919.Henry Cook is confirmed on the rolls for the Queens South Africa Medal with these 4 clasps and was awarded a pair of medals for the Great War (he is not entitled to the Kings South Africa Medal or either of the Great War Stars).

Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment 1917 Casualty, awarded to ‘ALBERT DICCOX’. Generally good condition. 22313 Private Albert Diccox, 2nd Devonshire Regiment who was killed in action aged 26 years on 14th April 1917 during the attack on Villers Guislains. The attack failed due to the presence of wire defences and heavy machine gun fire resulting in 17 Other Ranks being killed and 26 wounded. He was originally from Idstone Ashbury in Wiltshire.
