Hessen pattern cruciform spike base with domed rivets, special pattern fluted spike for the state of Hesse. Special type other ranks style cockades for the state of Hesse and reichs pattern. White metal scaled chinstraps. Interior of the helmet with leather sweatband and cloth lining. Some inked details of the original issued owner to the inside. Some wear and crazing to the shell but still a good example of a hard helmet from the Imperial era to find.

Leather liner to the interior and remains of the painted issue stamps to the interior. Helmet shell would appear to have been restored / re-painted in our opinion. Small rust hole to the rear.

German submarineU-48was aType VIIBU-boatoftheKriegsmarinein WW2, and the most successful that wascommissioned. During her two years of active service,U-48sank 51 ships for a total of 299,477 GRT and 1,060 tons; she also damaged four more for a total of 27,877 GRT over twelve war patrols conducted during the opening stages of theBattle of the Atlantic. She was taken off combat service and in 1945 she was scuttled on the bay of Lübeck, where she remains to this day.

Brass front trim, rear spine and circular spike base with domed rivets and other ranks spike. Saxon pattern non-serrated edged cockades and leather chinstrap. Interior of the helmet retains the original leather liner system. Ink stamped to the inside ‘B.D.III 1916’. Some crazing lines to the shell but otherwise a very good example.

Black cloth lining to the interior with the original paper label to the lower section. Some moth tracking and small holes but still a scarce tunic.
