At the outbreak of World War I, the yacht was leased by the United States Navy, and was used as a section patrol craft in the North Atlantic Ocean. She served honourably during the war, rescuing survivors at sea, and attacking a German U-boat. At war’s end, she was converted to her original configuration and returned to her owner, the railroad executive, financier, and philanthropist Frederick W. Vanderbilt. We can only assume that it was during the ships service, under Pownall, that she helped or distinguished herself to the Imperial Russian forces, later being recognised by the Soviets?

#306 – Rare WW2 British Drop Container (C.L.E) MK.III and Carrier (Лот: 12052)
Rare WW2 British Drop Container (C.L.E) MK.III and Carrier, A British drop container of which is a MK.III. Its main feature that identifies this model is the internal locking mechanism, and rectangular cut out in the parachute housing, which gives access to the handle for the user to open and close, unlike its predecessors which had external latches. Its of metal and wood construction, the wooden ends of the cylinder have become dried out and the top layer of wood starting to peel up and crack at the end which holds the bash/buffer plate in place. The buffer itself has been damaged probably by means of an actual drop due to the nature of the dent. It has a mixture of white and black paint still showing but has succumbed to surface rust, due to damp storage. The metal work is in good strong condition otherwise. The carrier/cradle and two straps that would secure it to the underside of an aircraft, accompanies the container. Nice piece of British airborne/special forces and resistance related equipment. PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT ABLE TO OFFER IN HOUSE POST AND PACKING ON THIS LOT DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT, SPECIALIST SHIPPING OR PERSONAL COLLECTION ONLY.
