He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on H.M.S. Impregnable on 9th October 1883. He transferred to the Coastguard service on 24th March 1897 being stationed at various locations on the south coast with Bexhill being his last station from 4th February 1905 until 30th June 1909 when he was pensioned off. His Long Service medal was confirmed on 16th February 1909.aylor was recalled for service on 2nd August 1914, he only served at home earning a British War medal for his Great War service. He was finally demobilised on 28th May 1919.

He started his career in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on HMS Impregnable on 27th March 1883. He is present on the rolls for the East & West Africa medal and the Q.S.A., both clasps are also confirmed. His Long Service medal was confirmed on 21st January 1895. Discharged to pension on 31st December 1904 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 14rh January 1905. Recalled for service on 2nd August 1914 he was invalided out of the service on 9th May 1917 due to and injury to his left eye and was issued with a Silver War Badge.

He was employed with the Egyptian Army between 28th February 1899 and 31st May 1901 for which he was awarded the Khedive Sudan meal with clasp and the Order of the Medjidie. erved in South Africa from 1st August 1901 until 31st December 1901 with the Royal Munster Fusiliers and commanding Damant’s Horse. He was dangerously wounded at Tafelkop on 20th December 1901, this eventually led to his retirement as medically unfit for further service in June 1905. Whilst recovering he was promoted Brevet Major on 29th January 1902. The Queens South Africa medal with 5 clasps is confirmed on roll for the Royal Munster Fusiliers, he also appears on the Damant’s Horse Roll.e was re-employed for the Great War between 15th September 1914 and 25th June 1919, serving in France from October 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions.e died in York, England, on 13th May 1942.

On the 1911 Census he is a medical student. We have been unable to confirm when he enlisted but his promotion to Captain in the West Riding Field Ambulance is confirmed in the London Gazette of 22nd September 1915. Promotion to Acting Major was confirmed in the London Gazette of 20th April 1918 and he relinquished has Acting rank in the Gazette of 24th July 1919.etween the wars he worked as a General Practitioner in the town of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire and on the outbreak of war in 1939 he was confirmed as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps from the Territorial Reserve of Officers (L.G. 8th November 1939). n September 1943 Lieutenant Colonel Hartas Foxton M.B, Ch.B. was on board the hospital ship H.M.H.S. Newfoundland, 1 of 3 hospital ships supporting the Salerno landings. Following several near misses on 12th September, it was decided to anchor the ships 40 nautical miles offshore for safety overnight. Despite being fully illuminated and marked with Red Cross markings, at 5am on 13th September Newfoundland was struck by a Henschel Hs293 air-launched glide bomb dropped by a Dornier bomber of KG100. The ship caught fire and after 36 hours was towed further out to sea and scuttled. At the time of the attack the ship was carrying 2 patients and 32 crew and 6 Medical Officers, including Lt Col. Foxton, and 6 Staff Nurses were killed during the attack.ieutenant Colonel Hartas Foxton is commemorated on the Brookwood 1939-1945 Memorial, Surrey.

By 1911 he was a Sea Apprentice with the Marine Society being based on T.S. Warspite at Greenhithe, Kent. He enrolled for the Royal Naval Reserve on 11th October 1915, he served on the Trawler Gwenllian operating out of Port Said from 30th September 1917 through to 2nd April 1918 and was demobilised in March 1919.ames Martin is believed to be the older brother of William and her served in South Africa with 1st Volunteer Company Royal Sussex Regiment. He is confirmed on the medal rolls for the 3 clasps present on this medal and is also entitled to the Belmont clasp. He died of enteric fever at Bloemfontein on 19th March 1901.

As war loomed he was sent to H.M.S. Hogue on 1st August 1914 and was still serving on board when she was sunk on by the U-9 on 22nd September 1914 with her sister ships Aboukir and Cressy. Hogue lost 377 men. Goldsmith served on H.M.S. Iris from 26th July 1915 to 30th June 1919 and was awarded his Long Service medal on 13th October 1917. He was discharged 1st April 1919. In 1939 he is shown as being a retired Royal Navy C.P.O. living in Chichester also serving with the A.R.P.;600;1000;600;600;Medals 88;Great War Q-Ship Distinguished Service Medal group of Five to a Royal Marine who was Decorated for his Service During the Attack on the Submarine U31;Great War Q-Ship Distinguished Service Medal group of Five to a Royal Marine who was Decorated for his Service During the Attack on the Submarine U31, Distinguished Service Medal, GV, ‘CH.13578 CPL. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he was serving on HMS Agamemnon, the vessel that he spent most of the war onboard and would have present when the ship was credited with shooting down the Zeppelin L.Z. 55 in Salonica on 5th May 1916. His service record indicates he served on HMS Redbreast between 18th February 1917 and 14th July 1917, but he must have spent other time on the Q-ship as his DSM was awarded for his service when Redbreast attacked the German submarine U31 on 16th July 1916. Lieutenant G.S. Brown was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for this action and asked to recommend 2 members of the crew for this action, Lance Corporal Emmett and Leading Stoker John Duncan.1 year later, on 15th July 1917, HMS Redbreast was sunk by the German submarine UC38 in the Aegean Sea with the loss of 42 members of her crew, according to his service record Robert Emmett had left Redbreast the day before on 14th July, returning to Agamemnon. emobilised on 22nd March 1919 he then joined the Royal Fleet Reserve being discharged on 15th December 1924.

Alfred Joseph Davis, O.N. 195828 (Ch.)he recommendation for this award states – HMS Dragon, Baltic 15th October to 23rd November 1919. Gunlayer of No.5 gun. When all his gun’s crew with exception of himself and the trainer had been killed or wounded by enemy shell, Chief Petty Officer Davis showed great coolness in assisting to extinguish the fire and remove the wounded. This Chief Petty Officer was previously recommended in 1918 in HMS Conquest when that ship was mined under No.3 gun of which he was gunlayer, for his action of throwing charges overboard and removing the wounded.lfred Joseph Davis was born in Chapeltown Yorkshire on 28th June 1880, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on Northampton. He is confirmed on the medal rolls for the China medal and Africa General Service medal and his Long Service medal was confirmed on 13th July 1913. His record confirms he was commended for good service when HMS Conquest was mined on 16th June 1918. Demobilised to shore on 16th August 1920 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 31st January 1921. By 1939 he is shown as a Sign and Poster Writer living in Dunmow, Essex with the responsibility of being an Air Raid Warden.

The index card for his Meritorious Service medal indicates the medal was awarded for home service.

Note spelling of Regiment on star, sold with research and colour photographs of grave. rnest Wiliam Martin lived in the village of Burwash in East Sussex and enlisted in Hastings. He served in France from 18th December 1915 and died on 14th November 1916 serving in ‘B’ Company. 24-year-old Ernest Martin now rests in Martinpuich British Cemetery, France as well as being remembered on the Burwash War Memorial and on a plaque in St Bartholomew’s Church, Burwash.
